Lexus of Richmond’s week 13 scholar athlete nominee is Sarah Bender of Douglas S. Freeman High School. Ranked 6th in a class of 396, she has a current GPA of 4.58. Sarah is a National AP Scholar, and she scored a 1490 out of 1600 on the SAT Exam. She is enrolled in the Center for Leadership, Government & Global Economics. She is a member of the National Honor Society and Mu Alpha Theta. Sarah was recognized by her school as the Outstanding Art Student as a freshman. For her junior year, she was named the Outstanding Math Student. In 2018 and 2019 Sarah received USA Swimming Scholastic All American honors. Sarah received the National French Award Bronze Medal in 2017 and 2019. She is a National Merit Semi-Finalist. Sarah received an Honorable Mention from the Virginia Junior Academy of Science, and she is a Scholastic Art & Writing Awards Silver Key Winner.
In her time at Douglas Freeman, Sarah has been involved in several student organizations. She is the Vice President of the National Honor Society. Sarah is a member of the BETA Club and the French Club. She is one of the Freeman Rebelettes. Sarah has also held a summer internship with Blue Ocean Brain.
Throughout her high school career, Sarah has collected numerous accolades from swimming for her school and NOVA. During her junior year, she was named Freeman’s MVP and selected for both the Richmond Metro 1st Team and the VHSL Swimming All State Team. As a freshman Sarah was selected for the Richmond Metro 2nd Team. She has been on the Virginia Swimming All Star team. Sarah is a 9x USA Speedo Junior Nationals Finalist and a qualifier for USA Nationals. She is a 6x Virginia State Champion. Sarah additionally is the Grey Oaks Swim Club Head Coach and the Richmond Country Club Junior Swim Coach. Sarah will continue her swim career as she has committed to swim for Notre Dame.
Outside of academics and athletics, Sarah is involved in giving back to her community. From 2016 – 2019 Sarah was the Richmond Country Club Food Drive Coordinator. She was a Volunteer Coach for the Grey Oaks Swim Club for two years. Sarah volunteered for the Richmond Marathon. Sarah gives her time to her school community through volunteering for the Freeman High School Yard Sale and though NHS Peer Tutoring.
