BEDFORD Co., Va. (WSET) -- A local woman is peeling back the curtain on adoption in a unique way, trying to help some friends raise the money necessary to help create a forever home for a child by Christmas.

If you've seen a woman riding a bike in a banana suit, that's Elisa Strange.

She's doing it all in the name of adoption awareness.

"I was like I need to do this," she said. "It's hard to come up with the thousands of dollars that it takes for private adoption."

When Strange found out her friends needed more money to legally adopt a little boy, she came up with something creative.

"Adoption I'm learning is an ongoing thing, until it's done, it's not done," said Bambi and Nick Durham, in the process of adopting a nine-year-old boy.

Bambi and Nick Durham are house parents, which means while biological parents work on getting healthy, the Durham's provide a stable home for the children in the meantime.

"We've loved him since the day we met him, he gives great hugs," they said.

In 13 years of marriage they have taken care of 97 children, but this little boy was different.

Strange's costumes gets attention as she hits the trail to spread awareness and for every $25 raised, she bikes another mile, so far, she's biked 50.

She's hoping to to raise enough money so the Durham's have the greatest holiday gift of all.

"Christmas would be our dream," she said.

A legal adoption so this little boy can be a Durham by the holidays.

You don't have to have a banana suit to help out the Durhams, they have raised more than $9,000 of their $10,000 goal. You can donate right here.
