Lexus of Richmond’s 30th and final nominee for the 24th Leadership Award Scholarship is Nick Viers of Douglas S. Freeman High School. With a current 4.6 GPA, he is ranked 7th in his graduating class. Having earned 4 perfect AP test scores, he is an AP Scholar with Distinction. He scored a 1410 out of 1600 on the SAT test and a 33 out of 36 on the ACT exam. Nick is a member of the National Honor Society and Mu Alpha Theta. He is also a member of the Beta Club, and Nick has received a Virginia Board of Education Seal of Biliteracy.
Away from the classroom setting, Nick is active is his school’s community. He is the Founder and President of the Douglas Freeman Relay for Life team. He leads the group in various activities and fundraising to benefit cancer research. The group has even won a Rising Star Award for their fundraising efforts. Nick has server as his class treasurer and is a member of the Model UN Club. He was accepted into the FBI Summer Youth Academy where he learned about the FBI and their protocols as well as tools or weapons and heard stories from spies and agents. As a member of the We the People team at Freeman, a Civics Competition Team, Nick recently competed in the National Championship where Freeman finished in 6th place overall.
As a freshman Nick began his swim career at Douglas Freeman with their club level team. The swim team became recognized as a Varsity Sport for his sophomore season. He was chosen as the team MVP for his senior season. Nick has been named to the Scholastic All American team in 2017, 2018 and 2019. For his senior season the team won the VHSL 5A State Championship becoming the first high school in Henrico Country to take a swimming title. Nick is the State Champ in the 200 Free Relay and the State Runner-Up in the 100 Fly and 100 Back. He was recognized on the All Metro and All State Teams for his senior year. Nick has been selected for the Virginia Swimming All star Team. Outside of his school team he has also been swimming for NOVA of Virginia Aquatics since he was seven years old. Nick will continue his career next school year as a part of Duke University’s swim team.
As the founder and president of the Freeman Relay for Life team, Nick has lead the fundraising efforts which have garnered winning a Rising Star Award.He has spent time volunteering for Little Feet Meet through the Special Olympics. He is a peer tutor at school through the National Honor Society, Beta Club and Mu Alpha Theta. Nick has aided and assisted with various Freeman events including: yard sales, trunk or treat, and canned food drives. For 6 years Nick has been the NOVA of Virginia Recycling Coordinator.
