Lexus of Richmond’s week 16 scholar athlete nominee is Avery Bowers of Maggie L. Walker Governor’s School. With a current 4.46 GPA, he is a member of the National Honor Society, Mu Alpha Theta, the American Sign Language Honor Society, and the French National Honor Society. Avery scored a 35 out a possible 36 on the ACT exam. He received a 740 out of a possible 800 on the SAT II US History. He has 4 perfect AP Exam scores making him an AP Scholar with Honor. In 2017 Avery earned a National French Exam Certificate of Success. Avery received the Scholastic Art and Writing Silver Key Award for Photography in 2018.

In his time at Maggie Walker, Avery has been involved with several student organizations. Since 2016 Avery has been a member of the Walker Model Congress. Within the Model Congress, he has held positions of: Board of Directors, Director of House Committees, Co-Chair of Special Committee, Co-Chair of House International Relations Committee, and Vice Chair of DEA Committee. As a senior, he is the Co-President of the American Sign Language Club and the Co-Secretary of the Baking Club. Outside of school he has been an Outside Service Attendant at The Crossings Golf Club and Willow Oaks Country Club. Avery is a 2 year Chair of St. Thomas’ Church Youth Council.

Throughout his high school career, Avery has been involved in both Varsity teams and club sports. He is a 4 year Varsity Golf team member. Avery has received the Coach’s Award. He is a 2x individual qualifier for the 2A State Championship. He finished in the top 13 individually at the 2018 State Meet. As a 4 year Varsity Basketball player, Avery is a two time captain of the team. He has played as the point guard, shooting guard, and forward. Avery has been on the Club Ultimate Frisbee team since his freshman year as a handler. Since 9th grade, he has been on the Club Dodgeball team, and he co-organized the 2020 Maggie Walker Charity Dodgeball Tournament.

Giving back to the community throughout high school, Avery has spent time with several organizations. While attending Maggie Walker, he has been a Leader for Prospective Students, and Avery has volunteered for the Maggie Walker Model UN Conference, Open Houses, Prospective Student Information Night, and the Fall Festival. From 2017-2018 he was a Lewis Ginter Botanical Gardens Camp Counselor. He was a volunteer for the Spanberger and Northam Campaigns. He has volunteered for CARITAS all throughout high school. Avery has given time to the St. Thomas Food Pantry and the Evergreen Cemetery. In 2018 and 2019 Avery spent time working with Pop Thrift and Habitat for Humanity.
